Girls Science Day (GSD) with Women in Science at Columbia (WISC)
Fall, 2016 - 2019

GSD is a day program for middle school girls to learn about science through hands-on activities from graduate students and postdoctoral researchers at Columbia University.

As a department, we regularly host an event for GSD to teach population ecology through a fun game of tag! The girls learned how to collect data, make a graph of results, and discuss conclusions while meeting female scientists and allies.

Stem Starters

"STEM Starters is an outreach program run by Columbia University graduate students who are passionate about teaching kids science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Every month, we invite middle school students from the Harlem Educational Activities Fund, Inc. (HEAF) to join us for an afternoon of experiments in different fields of science. This program is a collaboration between The Zuckerman Institute and Women in STEM at Columbia (WISC), and is supported by funding from the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology.

We want to inspire everyone’s inner scientist by showing that science is all around us and that exploring the world through STEM is really fun! From demonstrating how electronic circuits work to exploring animal behavior, we encourage students to engage scientifically with their world." - Stem Starters Website
